Where Is The Filter On A Keurig 2.0 And How To Change It

I noticed a flurry of questions on our online coffee community asking Where is the filter on a Keurig 2.0?

I guess many of the 25 million Keurig owners joined our community seeking and sharing information about making better coffee.

Right off the bat, here is where you can find the water filter on a Keurig 2.0 – it’s inside the water tank, you see it on the valve at the bottom.

A Keurig 2.0 has two types of filter holders: a side reservoir water filter holder for the K300, K400 and K500 and a rear water reservoir filter for the K200.

Thankfully the water filter cartridges are the same for all of the Keurig 2.0 models.

Where Is The Water Filter On Keurig 2.0?

In case you missed it above, and scanned down for the answer. All Keurig 2.0 machines have a water filter, but they are not always located in the same place. Where it is located depends on the articular model.

• K200 it’s located at the rear and is a reservoir filter.
• K300, K400, K500 it’s located on the side reservoir water filter for these models.

All Keurig 2.0 models use the exact same filter cartridges, which can be ordered online from Amazon, eBay, Target and Walmart.

How To Replace The Water Filter On A Keurig 2.0 Step By Step

It is important to replace the water filter in your coffee machine, regardless of the model or brand. Failure to replace it will result in a cup of coffee that is of a slightly lesser quality.

Eventually, the buildup of mineral deposits and calcium will start to block and damage your machine.

With that in mind, I advise you to replace your water filter at least every 60 days, basically every other month.

Step 1: Remove The Water Tank

Remove your water tank from your Keurig machine and discard any water that is in it. Remove the water filter holder.

Step 2: Open The Filter Holder

Press the tabs that are on both sides of the bottom of the water filter holder. At the same time pull down to separate Throw out the old water filter.

Step 3: Rise And Properly Clean The Filter Holder

Before you put in a new filter, clean and sanitize the filter holder.

Step 4: Prepare The New Filter

Take your new, fresh and clean water filter and soak it in fresh, clean water for 5 minutes. Rinse under running cold water for 1 minute.

Just as you wouldn’t buy a new mug and directly drink from it due to any dirt that it may have picked up, the same rule applies for filters.

Step 5: Put The Prepared Filter In The Holder

Put your ready and prepared filter into the upper part of your filter holder and close with the bottom part.

Set a reminder on your phone to alert you in 60 days when it is time to change it again. You can also place a stick on the side of your machine with the date that you last changed the filter.

You can use your machine to set an alert when it is time to change the filter. I’ll detail this in a moment.

Step 6: Put Your Filter Holder Back In The Tank

The final step. Put the filter holder with your new filter back into the tank and ensure that it is firmly in place.

One of the features of a Keurig 2.0 is the water filter alert, which will alert you when it is time to replace your water filter.

Setting the water filter reminder is easy. Just go to settings, water filter reminder and press enable followed by save.

When it is time to replace your filter, your Keurig 2.0 will give you the reminder message “time to replace the water filter”. When the time comes for replacing your filter, press continue, follow the step-by-step instructions above to replace your filter and then press yes and the replace filter reminder will be reset.

Even though your machine has a built-in filter, Keurig still recommends using bottled water or filtered water in their machines. Don’t use distilled or softened water in your Keurig.

To get the best tasting cup of coffee, add fresh filtered water to your tank before you use it and give it a proper deep clean every other week.

It is not a big deal if the machine and model that you want doesn’t have a filter. It’s not a big deal as you can filter your water using a water filter jug and then fill the water reservoir in your coffee machine.

What Happens If You Don’t Change Keurig Filter?

If you don’t change the charcoal filter in your Keurig coffee maker, it will no longer filter out the water and will affect the quality of your cup of coffee brewed and mineral deposits and limescale can build up in your coffee machine.

Can You Use Tap Water In A Keurig?

When you use tap water in your Keurig machine, mineral deposits and limescale can build up in the tubing, water heater and various other parts of your machine, including the needles, causing it to become clogged.

If you use tap water, ensure that it is filtered.

Which Keurig Does Not Have A Water Filter?

The Keurig K-Mini and K-Mini Plus don’t have a water filter. There are many more models both with and without a filter, I suspect that more will be added to that list as they update models and release new ones.

It is much better to ask the vender. Amazon, eBay and other retailers have the facility to ask questions.
