The key to making this recipe and getting it exactly as it is served and made in their outlets is to use their signature espresso roast and use the exact same amount of cold water to dilute the espresso shots.

Follow the table below for all the drink sizes at Starbucks to get the ratios correct and exactly as it is made in their coffee shops.

Drink Size Number O Espresso Shots Amount Of Ground Coffee To Use Amount Of Cold Water To Use
Tall 12 Oz (360 ml) 2 40 Grams. 10 Oz (300 ml).
Grande 16 Oz (480 ml) 3 60 Grams. 13 Oz (390 ml)
Venti 24 Oz (720 ml) 4 80 Grams. 20 Oz (600 ml).

Ingredients And Equipment Needed

A Starbucks Americano is an espresso-based coffee drink and requires an espresso machine to make this beverage exactly as it is in Starbucks.

Using a moka pot or an AeroPress is, at best, only going to be able to get you espresso like coffee and not espresso. They are great for making iced coffee but not Iced Americano.

  • Home espresso machine.
  • Digital coffee scales.
  • Ceramic conical burr grinder.
  • Starbucks signature espresso roast coffee beans.
  • Water.
  • Ice.

How To Make A Starbucks Copycat Iced Americano At Home

Follow these step-by-step instructions exactly as indicated to get world-class iced espresso.

The better your espresso shots are, the better your iced Americano will be.

Step 1: Weigh Your Coffee Beans

Using the chart above, calculate how much coffee beans you will need by weight. 20 grams per shot will produce a good strong shot.

Step 2: Grind Your Coffee Beans

Grinding is easy. Grind your coffee beans in short, sharp 10-second bursts. A perfect grind size is 200 microns, which is a fine powder-like grind.

A ceramic burr grinder is the best due to the insulation of heat and less heat transfer from the burr to your beans results in less “cooking” of your beans as they are being ground.

Although a flat ceramic burr is best for espresso grinds, at Latte Love Brew we recommend a conical burr grinder as it gives you flexibility of using other brewing methods and getting a high quality even and consistent grind size.

Step 3: Tamp Your Grounds

Tamping is easy, very easy, and it is very important. It is an underrated skill. I encourage you to focus on it. Poor tamping can lead to problems like channeling.

Tamp with a firm and even pressure of 30 Kg.

Step 4: Pull Your Shots

Pull your shots and set up your digital scale to measure the weight as your shots are extracting.

Your shots should weigh 30 grams and 60 grams for a single and double shot respectively. For my American friends, that’s 1 or 2 ounces.

Time your brew. It should take 25 to 30 seconds with a variation of 5 seconds.

Outside this range, and you will need to make some minor adjustments. If your machine is set up perfectly in terms of water pressure, temperature, flow rate of your water and amount poured, it is the grind size that will need to be adjusted.

If your brew time is too long, increase the grind size. If your brew time was too short, do the opposite and make it smaller.

Step 5: Transfer Time!

Transfer your espresso shots to a tall glass with ice. Add your water to dilute your shots using an espresso shot to cold water ratio of 1:5.

Stir well to mix the cold water and enjoy.
