A peculiar and curious question, who orders an iced Americano, was asked in our coffee community. It’s not something that I have particularly thought about, and it got me thinking and researching.

Iced Americano is ordered by many people, young and old, men and women and of all nationalities.
The drink is more popular in the summer and in tropical climates due to being a cold drink, with South Koreans, by far, ordering is far more often and frequently than other nationalities.
Iced coffee, known as Ah-Ah (colloquially, an Abbreviation), is somewhat of a trendy fashion statement and much loved by K-Pop idols and stars.
In Seoul, Busan and Incheon you’ll see billboards, both traditional and electronic, K-Pop stars drinking or holding iced Americano coffee.
I hung out at various coffee shops including Starbucks, Angel-in-us, Caffe Bene observing if there was any particular demographic ordering “Ah-Ah” more than others.
Taking a basic, old-fashioned, survey of asking groups of people why their coffee of choice was an iced Americano, I got some helpful information.
- It’s cheap.
- It gives them the energy boost that they need.
- Younger people love it for study sessions.
- Older people, working age, like it to keep them going (Koreans are hardworking people).
Having worked in Spain in coffee shops and restaurants for many years, both in the tourist sector and far away from it in small towns, the most popular demographic for an iced Americano are men aged 30+
As a UK national, iced coffee is not at all a popular drink. Coffee drinks with ice are generally not popular due to the climate, where at best, is has mild summers.

Why Do Idols Drink Iced Americano?
Idol, pop stars, movie stars, including K-Pop stars, who are often seen in billboard adverts advertising iced Americano drink it for the same reason that men and women on a diet choose iced Americano as their coffee of choice.
It is a low calorie drink with no fat and no sugar. A Starbucks Americano (hot or iced) has from 5 calories (Short 8 Oz (240 ml)) drink size to 15 calories in the larger venti drink size.
….and there is an ample caffeine boost with caffeine content ranging from 75 mg in their short 8 Oz 240 ml to a very ample 300 mg for the venti drink size.
It’s a simple drink with an espresso shot or two, or three or four depending on the drink size and diluted with cold water using an espresso to water ratio of 1:5 with ice added to chill the drink.
What kind Of People Drink Americano?
According to psychologists and anthropologists, drinkers of caffé Americano, hot or iced, tend to be outgoing, sociable and extroverts that thrive in groups.
Americano drinkers tend to seek out new engagements in their personal lives and are unpredictable and moody despite being proactive in their social lives.

Why Do People Order Americano?
Everyone has their favorite coffee and their own personal taste, be it a regular latte, an iced latte, espresso, an iced caffé Americano or any other coffee drink.
It is a great tasting black coffee drink with the oily rich notes and flavors that many people enjoy.
It’s a drink that people order when an espresso or brewed coffee is a little too strong or not to their liking and dilute the flavor and consistency with water.
Do People Order Americano With Milk?
An Americano with milk is actually called an Americano misto. The addition of milk tones down the acidity and takes the edge of the bitter notes due to the milk sugars.
It is a drink that is an enjoyable twist on a regular Americano.

It is special because it is a purer form of a large black coffee that is made instantly and unfiltered.

When Should You Drink Americano?
An Americano is the type of coffee that you can drink at any time of the day. There is no set time. It is simply a shot of espresso that has been watered down with hot water or cold water in the case of an iced Americano.
Due to the caffeine content, it is advised that you don’t drink an Americano or any coffee after 4 or 5 PM.
What Do Americans Call An Americano?
Rather oddly, a caffe Americano is called an Americano by Americans. The name comes from the General infantrymen who were stationed in Italy during the second world war and the coffee created by them.
The drink that they were seeking, a black brewed coffee, was not available in Italy and the local black coffee, a shot of espresso, was both too small and too strong for American tastes and the American soldiers added hot water to dilute the coffee and make it larger. Thus, a new drink was born.
Since it was only ordered by Americans, it became known as caffe Americano, which translates to American coffee.
Does Americano Cause Bloating?
Yes, coffee of all types causes bloating, including café Americano. It’s only a temporary thing and does not happen to everyone. The bloating is more caused by the caffeine than the actual coffee and thus, the only coffee that won’t cause bloating is decaffeinated coffee.
