The water, after a predetermined period of time, which varies depending on the water temperature, brewing method and grind size, extracts the flavor, nutrients, caffeine content and is served without the addition of milk or any other dairy or non-dairy product.

Often, without sugar also. Literally it is coffee au naturel with nothing further added. Not many coffee lovers and enthusiasts enjoy their coffee black, and it is said to be an acquired taste.

I find the best, depending on how you like your coffee, is a good old-fashioned drip coffee with a metal filter or a pour over with a metal filter.

My own purpose of drinking my coffee black is to enjoy the flavor of the new beans I am trying out. If I use a paper filter or cloth filter, I am effective at reducing the flavor profile due to some (cloth filter) of the coffee oils being filtered out or all (paper filter).
