Black coffee is not quite something everyone likes and, I’ll be straight with you, I’m not a big fan of black coffee but make the point of drinking at least 3 cups, the first 3 cups of new coffee beans I’m trying out. There is literally no better way of getting to know the flavor profile or the beans. This article, the best coffee to drink black is dedicated to listing the top 10 black coffees to enjoy black.

Through this article I’ll detail what black coffee is, which roast is best for black coffee, the top 10 best black coffees for beginners and a lot more.

Keep reading as we dig into this topic, starting with….

What Is Black Coffee?

Black coffee, as simple as it sounds, is coffee that is brewed with roast ground coffee beans and water.

The water can be hot or cold, as is the case with cold brew coffee. The water, after a predetermined period of time, which varies depending on the water temperature, brewing method and grind size, extracts the flavor, nutrients, caffeine content and is served without the addition of milk or any other dairy or non-dairy product.

Often, without sugar also. Literally it is coffee au naturel with nothing further added. Not many coffee lovers and enthusiasts enjoy their coffee black, and it is said to be an acquired taste.

Black coffee can be served as it is or with ice.

Which Roast Is Best For Black Coffee?

There is no particular roast that is best as, in the case of coffee, it is subjective and based on personal taste.

Lighter roasts and light roasts in general are best enjoyed as a black coffee if you are new to drinking coffee this way or if you have top quality single origin beans, and you want to enjoy the unique flavors of the origin.

Light roast coffee beans also stand out as a great starting point for beginners getting into black coffee due to not having overtly strong bitter flavors.

Medium roasts are slightly better if you are fine with drinking your coffee black and enjoying a deeper flavor, more traditional coffee taste with notes of the origin and, really a good mix of flavors from the roasting process too.

A medium roast is good to start with for non-black coffee drinkers who don’t like specialty coffee or single origin coffees.

Dark roast is not ideal for newbies unless your brew method is serving up an espresso, a ristretto, doppio or another espresso-based drink.

Black coffee tastes too strong as a dark roast for newbies as any other coffee drink such as a caffe Americano.

What Is The Best Coffee Drink To Drink Black?

Which coffee drink to enjoy black is a personal choice. As I mentioned earlier, I am not a big drinker of black coffee at all.

I find the best, depending on how you like your coffee, is a good old-fashioned drip coffee with a metal filter or a pour over with a metal filter.

My own purpose of drinking my coffee black is to enjoy the flavor of the new beans I am trying out. If I use a paper filter or cloth filter, I am effective at reducing the flavor profile due to some (cloth filter) of the coffee oils being filtered out or all (paper filter).

Other very interesting black coffees are siphon coffee, Chemex, cold brew, an espresso and Caffe Americano.

Can We Drink Black Coffee On An Empty Stomach?

While I am not a medic nor do I offer any medical advice. Based on my own experience, coffee, be it black or white, is fine to drink on an empty stomach.

Coffee does elevate the production of stomach acid but appears not to provoke digestive issues.

How Do I Train Myself To Drink Black Coffee?

The best way to train yourself to not only drink black coffee but to enjoy it is to make a regular coffee with dairy and then week by week reduce the amount of milk or cream that you add. Reduce 10% every week and in just over 2 months you will be enjoying a black coffee and keep it that way!

How Do You Drink Black Coffee Without Bitter Taste?

The magic is in a very odd and peculiar ingredient, salt! Adding only a tiny dash, I mean a real tiny sprinkle makes your coffee less bitter and also freshens up old coffee beans. It’s a fabulous trick that I learned in Vietnam.

Other items you can add are a slice of lemon, which brings out the citrus flavors, or a slice of orange, which reduces the bitterness.

Before you add anything, focus on your coffee brewing and find out if there is something that you can fix to reduce the bitterness by making an adjustment to your technique. You can look at the temperature – is it too hot (above 205F (96C)), are you brewing for too long, is the grind size too short?

Can you change and use better water?

Does your machine need to be descaled?

What Coffee Is Smooth And Not Bitter?

All coffee beans have at least some degree of bitterness to them. It is a question of how bitter. Arabica coffee is less bitter than other beans and a lot smoother.

Is It Good To Drink Black Coffee Everyday?

There is no harm in drinking and enjoying a cup or two of black coffee. In fact, research indicates that a couple of cups of coffee per day will help to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Is A Cappuccino A Black Coffee?

No, a cappuccino is a strong well-brewed shot of espresso with an equal amount of steamed milk and milk froth. All three components are in equal ratios.

Is A Latte A Black Coffee?

No, a latte is a coffee that is made with a shot of espresso and steamed milk. The coffee to milk ratio is 1:2 with twice as much steamed milk as there is espresso. A latte is the drink that you see with some intricate and amazing latte art designs.
