I got asked by email how to make a Starbucks simple syrup recipe, of which, at Latte Love Brew, I am happy to duly oblige.

However,

I’d like to point out straight away – at Starbucks it is not called simple syrup, it is called Starbucks classic syrup. There is only a slight difference between classic syrup and simple syrup – which I talk about in this article.

What Is Starbucks Simple Syrup?

Starbucks simple syrup is known as classic syrup at the gourmet coffee conglomerates’ outlets. It is, in the most simplest and basic terms, is liquid sugar.

They use syrup to sweeten their drinks as it mixes better than granulated sugar as it gives a more even sweetness through the drink and does not add or alter the flavor in any way.

It is made of sugar and water.

Starbucks Simple Syrup Recipe

You can make this recipe in the comfort of your home in as little as 5 minutes. There are only two ingredients – sugar and water. At Latte Love Brew we encourage you to use the best possible ingredients and that includes the best possible water – use bottled water, if that is not possible use at the very least filtered water.

Spend a few pennies more to get the best sugar available to you.

The way Starbucks makes their Classic syrup is a 1:1 ratio of sugar and water, you can adjust to your own personal preference.

Making a liquid sweetener is much better than adding sugar to both hot and cold drinks as you get a much better end result with it as it mixes better and more evenly.

Ingredients

Sugar: Granulated white sugar is what Starbucks uses to make classic syrup. You can, if you want, use cane sugar.

Water: Use bottled water; if this is not possible, use filtered water.

There is nothing complicated at all here, just two simple steps.

  • 1. Put an equal amount of sugar and water – by weight into your saucepan and let it simmer. Simmer your water on a low heat until all of your sugar has dissolved, and then let it cool.
  • 2. Pour your syrup into a glass airtight container. Plastics seep unhealthy xeno-estrogens and are unhealthy and lead to all sorts of health complications. Ditch the plastic in all parts of your life.

What Does Starbucks Classic Syrup Taste Like?

Starbucks classic syrup is a flavorless liquid sugar that has the flavor that you would expect when you mix sugar with water to create a syrup. It is sweet and sugary but has no particular taste of note.

This is why it is used as a sweetener – it has no effect on the quality of coffee beans or tea leaves used to brew your drink. As an absolute bonus, you don’t suffer the sickly over sweetness at the end of your coffee as the classic syrup dissolves more easily giving a better distribution of sweetness.

Is The Classic Syrup At Starbucks Sweet?

Classic syrup at Starbucks is, in my opinion and experience, sweet. It is a 50% water and 50% cane sugar mix and nothing else. It is a little sweeter than Torani classic syrup and other simple syrup alternatives.

When you make your own at home with a copycat recipe, you can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less water than the amount of sugar that you use.

Starbucks classic syrup offers you no nutritional value at all, no vitamins, no minerals – nothing. A single pump, which is approximately 30ml or 1 fluid ounce, contains 20 calories.

There are 5 grams of sugar and 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving.

If you frequent Starbucks and love their coffee, you will know that they have all sorts of drinks with a range of flavor options like:

Literally, there is something for everyone – not matter how fussy or peculiar their tastes are. Their newest one is liquid cane sugar syrup, which is known as Starbucks classic syrup.

The difference between the two is very fine. Classic syrup is made with sugar while a regular liquid cane sugar is made with sugar and turbinado cane sugar. Turbinado is a sugar that does not go through the same level of processing as regular cane sugar. The result of which is that it has a slightly different flavor.

Neither of the two alters the flavor of your drink in any way other than making it sweeter.

Two pumps of syrup at Starbucks equates to 2 fluid ounces. Each pump is one fluid ounce. The larger your drink, the more pumps it gets. Tall gets 3 pumps, grande its 4 and a venti has 5 pumps and a venti iced has 6 pumps.

If your Grande, Venti or Venti iced tastes too sweet – ask for fewer pumps of syrup.
