Folgers uses the direct solvent process to decaffeinate their coffee. This process involves the use of the solvent ethyl acetate to remove the caffeine from the coffee beans.
The green unroasted coffee beans are steamed to open the pores of the coffee beans and then soaked in ethyl acetate, which attaches to the caffeine.
After soaking in the solvent, the beans are then steamed to open the pores again to remove the solvent and caffeine. The beans are then dried and roasted.
The process ensures that no solvent remains in the coffee beans. Unfortunately, other compounds are removed also and while it does remove a high amount of caffeine, it also removes some of the compounds that affect the flavor.
