Yes, coconut milk is very good in coffee; in fact I’ll go as far as saying that it is a pretty amazing alternative to dairy milk for flavor and is highly compatible with a number of special dietary needs like:
- Keto diet, coconut milk is keto friendly.
- Gluten-free diet.
- Vegan diet.
The main reason for adding coconut to your coffee is flavor and regardless of what type of diet you are on, as mentioned above, it is vegan and keto compatible and is gluten-free. The only excuse for not adding coconut milk to your coffee is that you don’t enjoy the flavor, or you have an allergy.

Is Coconut Milk Good For You?
Yes, coconut milk is well known for having multiple health benefits and can definitely be considered as being good for you.
Some of the benefits include being great for reducing your cholesterol and cardio health due to the healthy fats, the medium chain triglycerides (MCT for short) and stimulating weight loss due to increasing the rate at which you burn stored energy.
Coconut milk is also highly nutritious and contains lauric acid, which is antiviral and antimicrobial, which is a very good reason for making your morning coffee with coconut milk or coconut creamer instead of cows milk.
That post-workout coffee and the afternoon summer pick me up? Give good consideration to a coconut milk coffee too as it is full of electrolytes to rehydrate you.
Since I’ve been talking a lot about coconut milk and coffee, let’s get to the beef of it and talk about the best coconut milk for coffee.
Best Coconut Milk For Coffee
The best three coconut milk for coffee beverages are as follows.
- Native Forest Organic Premium Quality Coconut Cream, 165 ml (5.4 Oz), Unsweetened.
- Vita Coco Original Unsweetened, Dairy Free Milk Alternative 1 Liter (33 Oz).
- Anthony’s Organic Coconut Milk Powder, 454 grams (1 pound).
While I am not a particular fan of coconut milk powder, it is very convenient and long-lasting and easily mixed with your coffee. I love it for weekends away and for camping trips.
Healthiest Coconut Milk For Coffee
The healthiest coconut milk for coffee in my opinion and experience is full fat coconut milk.
This type of coconut milk is free from additives like xanthan gum and gellan gum which are used as emulsifier and to stabilize the milk.
The fat content of coconut milk is not a concern as the fat is healthy MCT medium chain triglyceride fats which have innumerable health benefits.
Also, with full fat coconut milk you can make coconut coffee creamer and coconut cream, and you still have that option of turning it into coconut milk by adding coconut water.
Water is usually added to make coconut milk, but coconut water adds nutrients, use coconut water!
Here is what I consider to be the healthiest coconut milk:
- Unsweetened Coconut Milk Two Simple Ingredients By Thai Kitchen
- Regular Organic Coconut Milk By Thrive Market.
- Classic Organic Coconut Milk By Field Day.
- Classic Organic Coconut Milk By Native Forest.
- Unsweetened Organic Coconut Milk By Thai Kitchen.
- Unsweetened Organic Coconut Milk By Sprouts.
- Unsweetened Organic Coconut Milk By Native Forest.
- Unsweetened Coconut Milk By Good And Gather.
Those are eight great coconut milks that are full fat, have the least additives, with most of them being organic, all of them are delicious!
You can use full fat coconut milk to make a more decadent coconut coffee with greater texture and richer mouthfeel due to the extra creaminess and use it as a coffee creamer.
You can also whip it to make an amazing coconut Dalgona coffee and some very tasty cold foams and sweet creams.

How To Use Coconut Milk In Coffee
There are many ways in which you can use coconut milk in coffee beverages; obviously the better your coconut milk is and the better the quality of coffee, the better the end result will be.
The most obvious way is to brew your morning coffee in the way in which you love it and simply add a little dash of coconut milk.
But,
don’t add cold coconut milk to your hot coffee as it may curdle due to the temperature shock. Heat your coconut milk lightly either in a saucepan or for a few seconds in your microwave.
Be careful of not overheating your coconut milk as it may curdle also. Nut-based and plant-based milks can be difficult to work with for coffee drinks, which can also make it curdle.
This is why coffee shops and baristas use barista-branded alternative milks.
Making A Coconut Milk Latte
You can make a coconut milk latte either as a hot coffee or an iced coffee.
Start by making a double espresso shot.
Weigh 40 grams of premium quality whole coffee beans of a medium-dark or dark roast.
Grind your beans to a fine powder like espresso grind size of 200 microns using a ceramic flat burr grinder.
Grind in 5 second bursts and rest for 3 seconds. This technique avoids clumping and helps to protect your coffee from heat while grinding.
Tamp with care and attention ensuring your tamp is perfectly flat and even. Tamp with an even pressure of 30 kg.
Put your digital coffee scale on your drip tray and put your coffee cup on top. Tare your scales.
Pull your shot, time the extraction and check the weight. The weight should be 60 grams (2 Oz).
The extraction time should be 25 seconds or as close to 25 seconds as possible with a permitted variance of 5 seconds.
If your shot is less than or more than 60 grams, you may need to adjust your machine and stop manually or brew a little more.
If your brew time is less than 20 seconds, the obvious and easiest solution is to use a slightly smaller grind size.
If your brew time is more than 30 seconds, adjust your grind size and make it slightly larger.
If you are making a hot coconut milk latte, steam 4 ounces (120 ml) lightly and with care and attention not to steam it too quickly and at too high a temperature.
Use the same care and attention when frothing your coconut milk.
Pour your steamed coconut milk into your double espresso and add a little latte art if you so wish.
If you are making an iced coconut latte, add your double espresso to a cocktail shaker with ice, add your coconut milk and shake with vigor for 30 seconds.
This step is to chill your drink and help to delay the melting of the ice and making your beverage watery and weak.
Pour into a tall glass with fresh ice and enjoy.

Making A Coconut Milk Cappuccino
Follow the instructions above for making your espresso and steamed milk. Pour using a different espresso to milk ratio.
A cappuccino uses a ratio of 1:1:1 for the espresso, steamed milk and milk foam.
For an iced cappuccino, make coconut milk cold foam instead and use the same ratios of 1:1:1 for the three components.
Making A Coconut Dalgona Coffee
A coconut Dalgona coffee coffee is an amazing variation of a stand out coffee.
Use full fat coconut milk and whip it into a dense foam using a high speed blender. Add your double shot of espresso and add a teaspoon of honey. Blend to mix in your coffee and honey perfectly.
Serve your stiff and fluffy coffee in a glass and enjoy.
