When you are on a diet and watching your calorie intake, you might be asking yourself how many calories in flavored coffee?

The answer is simple!

It depends!

Being a stickler for details I’ll explain that vague answer and as a bonus I will show you how to make your own calorie-free flavored coffee – any flavor you so want!

Stay tuned and keep reading to find out.

Does Flavored Coffee Have Calories?

Flavored coffee is both loaded with extra unnecessary calories and has zero calories. It all depends on how you have your flavored coffee. Then your coffee, be it a vanilla flavored coffee, black hazelnut coffee, or whatever flavored coffee drink is going to end up as a calorie laden coffee drink.

The problem is not the choice of coffee or the coffee beans, or the gourmet coffee shop in your neighborhood, be it Starbucks or whatever.

Coffee on its own has very few calories. Typically, just 3 calories per 12 ounce cup.

The calories are in what you add to your cup of coffee and how the franchise outlet flavors them – which is usually sugary flavored syrups.

You’ve seen them, especially caramel syrup and the liquid sweetener which is high fructose corn syrup. Every two pumps of syrup has 40 calories, thus 20 calories per pump of the flavored syrup.

There are also calories in the sugar and milk that you add to your coffee.

A teaspoon of sugar, on average, has 16 calories, 2 teaspoons of sugar. How I like my coffee adds 32 calories to the 3 calories that a regular Caffe Americano has, totalling 35 calories.

I’m sure you know all these artificial flavorings are not so good for your health nor your daily intake of sugar and calories.

Flavored coffee beans that you buy from a store made with flavoring oils contain zero added calories. You make your own with your own flavoring oils or, a much healthier option, with the spices and natural ingredients that you wish to flavor your coffee with.

The best part is they also have no added calories and no artificial flavors.

What About Naturally Flavored Coffee?

Naturally flavored coffee beans have no extra calories, no additional grams of sugar and zero grams of fat added to the coffee beans.

Coffee lovers that love flavored coffee prefer to use this very simple and very natural calorie free method.

Your first step is to decide what flavor of coffee you want to make – coconut, cinnamon, cacao, vanilla, ginger or whatever you wish.

The second step is to get freshly roasted coffee grounds. At Latte Love Brew we encourage you to get in on the home roasting revolution and roast your coffee beans.

With your chosen flavor, let’s assume it is ginger, chop some fresh ginger and place an ample amount in an airtight coffee canister with a one-way valve.

The one way valve is important to let out the carbon dioxide and to inhibit the entry of air.

After 24 hrs to 72 hrs, checking and testing every day by making a coffee with your beans to find out if it has the desired flavor that you are seeking.

When it is, simply remove the remainder of the flavoring, in our case, ginger, and store your bean in an airtight container with a one-way valve.

Does Hazelnut Coffee Have Calories?

Of course, hazelnut coffee has calories – there are calories in coffee after all. The only additional calories that hazelnut coffee has depends on how you flavored your coffee.

If it is flavored with pumps of syrup and two sugars to sweeten your coffee, then your Hazelnut coffee is going to have 20 x 3 = 60 calories for the flavored syrup plus 2 x 16 for the sugar, coming to 92 calories.

Then the coffee itself – 3 calories and 95 calories in total.

However,

if you have flavored your coffee beans by using chopped and grated hazelnuts in a container with your freshly roasted coffee beans like the technique I spoke about above, then the total calorie count comes to 35 as we can deduct the 60 calories from the syrup that you have no need to use.

Does Vanilla Flavored Coffee Have Calories?

As above, in your calorie diet or rather your calorie controlled diet, how many calories there are in your vanilla flavored coffee is down to you and how you flavor your coffee.

Not all flavored coffee has to be made using sugary syrup. In my own opinion, detrimental to the desired flavor of the coffee is adding syrups. You get a much better and more natural flavor and delicious smelling flavored coffee by flavoring the beans yourself.

It is only a bonus that you will have fewer calories as well.

As I taught you, the technique simply takes advantage of the ability of coffee to absorb scents and flavors by taking some organic vanilla, chopping it and placing it in an airtight coffee canister with freshly roasted coffee beans.

How To Flavor Coffee Beans At Home?

There are two options when it comes to flavoring coffee beans. One way involves the use of flavoring oils, which are often fake flavorings which are full of chemicals and not exactly, in my opinion, the delicious option nor the healthy option.

With this option, you simply select the flavoring of your choice. There are hundreds of flavoring oils of all types available online – hundreds.

You then, with freshly roasted beans, sprinkle 1 to 3 teaspoons per pound (454 grams) of coffee beans, evenly on the beans and toss them well for 2 minutes and let them sit for 30 min to an hour to absorb the flavoring. Then toss the beans again for a minute or two.

Once you have finished the second round of tossing, dry the beans with a paper towel.

The other method is simply placing the natural product or spice that you want to flavor your coffee beans with in a canister with them for a day or two. It is important that the beans are freshly roasted as they will take on the flavor better.

Flavoured Coffee Beans Are They Unhealthy?

Yes,

If you’re using a lot of squirts and pumps of sugary flavored syrups or chemical-laden oils, then yes flavored coffee and flavored coffee beans are unhealthy.

But if you are using the method of adding spices and natural flavors to your storage canister of coffee beans.

Then, absolutely yes, they are indeed healthy.

There are no additional calories in flavored coffee pods as they are flavored artificially using flavored oil. The flavoring adds less than 1 calorie to the 2 to 4 calories that a flavored coffee pod has.

If your flavored coffee is flavored using sugar-based syrups or flavored milk then without a doubt the sugar content has increased. If the flavor has been added using spices or using the natural method of flavoring coffee then no additional sugar has been added.

Yes, but flavor your coffee naturally by adding the spice to your coffee. If you are fasting I’d avoid adding sugar based syrups as the additional sugar may prevent your body from going into a state of ketosis.

The lowest calorie coffee beverage is a caffe Americano, a straight black coffee. With nothing added to it, no sugar, no milk and no flavoring a black coffee has the lowest calorie count.

No, there are no additional calories in Starbucks flavored K-Cups. They are not flavored using syrup or sugar. They are flavored using artificial flavoring.

Artificially flavored coffee is flavored using a chemical with a name that you might recognize: propylene glycol, you may know as antifreeze.

It’s used as a carrier for the flavoring agent, unfortunately 85% of the oil is propylene glycol which is why I don’t recommend artificially flavored coffee beans or grounds.
